Keeping Choirs running throughout the COVID-19 Lockdown in the UK
So here we are in the first week of lockdown in the UK due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Obviously this has had major effects on our business and, whilst we are open for business, we are unable to do any of the recordings that had been scheduled, for the foreseeable future.
However, everyone is in the same situation and so regardless, we must all just put on a brave face and be British about it and get on with, whatever we can find to get on with at home!
All around the globe we are seeing videos and pictures on social media of choirs embracing Zoom for their rehearsals. There has been lots of discussion as to how useful this is. Ultimately the conclusion I have drawn with my own choirs is that it doesn’t really work that well for a group rehearsal. Certainly not in the traditional sense. However, it is very good at bringing people together, albeit virtually. In the current situation this alone has to be a good thing.
It will be interesting to see how choirs manage and adapt to using online solutions for the foreseeable future. Obviously like everyone else, I hope this situation will not last for too long. But for now we just have to adapt and get on with finding new solutions to problems which didn’t previously exist.
For now all our recordings are cancelled or postponed until later in the year or in many cases next year. Quite when we will be able to get back out on the road to do some recording is currently anyone’s guess. However, just as soon as there is a sense of normality we intend to be ready to start recording again.
