Recordings 4 Choirs were on location in South East London & Kent this weekend to record Love 2 Sing Voices at West Wickham Methodist Church
A year or so ago our sister company, Recordings 4 Schools was on location to record at Hayes Primary School. Today, we were not far from there when we arrived at West Wickham Methodist Church for our recording session with Love2Sing Voices. West Wickham is described as a suburban area of South East London, England, within the London Borough of Bromley and the historic county of Kent.
Arrival and Setting up
Arriving at the appointed time of 08.30 we were met by Holly, who is the choirs MD. We quickly made our way into the church and started to set up an array of microphones. Based on the choir being around 60-70 strong we established the stage being the most sensible place to record the choir from. There was talk of keeping the choir in the rows of chairs, but ideally for recording you need choirs to be grouped together. This will help to achieve a balanced sound.
Before long the mics were up and the choir had started to arrive for their recording session. Holly had a number of energetic warmups which enabled us to get some levels.
The Recording Session
By 10.00am we were ready to start recording. As we were competing with a rugby match (England vs South Africa in the rugby World Cup final apparently), one or two people had apparently been given permission to arrive a bit later….! As it turned out, the rugby didn’t go that well for England. Given this, for anyone disappointed by this, a day spent singing some fab songs was probably a very good tonic.
Holly had planned the day into 4 blocks of 3 songs. The first ‘session’ of the day included Higher and Higher, Seasons of Love and Someone Like You. Even during the warm up the choir sounded fab but once they got on stage and started singing to their backing track the sound was awesome. One of the many great things about my job is going around listening to lots of different choirs. Nowadays there are many choirs, which of course is great for us, but they are all unique in their own way. Every choir has its own sound and blend of voices. Love2Sing are aptly named as, apart from an initial reluctance to stand too close to the microphones, this bunch really did love singing.
Listening to the detail
To help Holly listen to exactly what was going on we set up a separate pair of Headphones by her podium. This meant that Holly could listen to all the detail of the recording whilst directing her choir. All Musical Directors are different. Some want to hear everything all the time, others prefer to just listen back after and some again prefer to only listen through speakers. Like most things we do, there is no right or wrong. Our job as a recording company is to be flexible enough to adapt to each individuals preference.
Time for Lunch
After a couple of recording sessions it was time for lunch. And this meant a bring and share lunch to which Shelly and I were invited. And what a bring and share it was! Love2Sing voices definitely win this year’s award for catering!
We carried on recording into the afternoon and recorded 12 songs in total with Love2Sing Voices. We had a really great time with this choir and the CD is currently being worked on in our production studio. The album will also soon be available to purchase online and we will add a link here when it’s released.
